The Howard University Alternative Spring Break (HUASB) program, is a student-led organization that
sends hundreds of students to serve in cities domestically and internationally during their
spring break. This year, HUASB decided to serve in El Paso, Texas, from March 6-10, 2023, under the initiatives of Youth Empowerment and Developing Pathways to Housing and Food Stability.
HUASB was able to help battle hunger insecurity in the borderland by packaging and distributing food at our food bank. As well as volunteering with other local nonprofit organizations that battle hunger insecurity, such as Jardin de Los Milagros and Kelly Food Pantry.
This experience allowed HUASB students to learn how our borderland community experiences and battles hunger insecurity. The students will be able to take the skills learned during this experience, to their home towns as well as their university in Washington, DC. The students hope that this exchange of knowledge will help them improve and expand existing projects that focus on addressing hunger insecurity in Washington; as well as in a near future initiate projects of their own.
