Mothers Build Friendships While Giving Back

It’s a group of ten women who all gather together on a Wednesday morning. They’re eager to be put to work, ready to pack boxes, sort through food and laugh as they catch up about how their week is going.

Some are friends, while others just met.

Yet, they all have one thing in common.

They are all mothers.

“As a mother, you never want to think about your kids being hungry,” Billie, a mother of three children said. “There have been times when money is very tight and those are the times when you’ll skip a meal so that there is more to go around.”

Billie knows that those hard times don’t last forever.

“It just happens sometimes but to help somebody else out is the best thing you can do,” she said.

For Erica, volunteering at the food bank takes her back to her childhood.

“My mom was a single-mother and I didn’t know that she didn’t always have money for everything because she never told us,” Erica said. “She used to take us to volunteer at the food bank (back home) and without our knowledge we were taking some of that food home. That’s why I love to give back for families that don’t have much.”

These mothers know that making a small effort to give back is what matters most. They appreciate being able to do it while building their friendships.

“These ladies motivate me,” Billie said. “We could’ve gone for coffee or went shopping but instead we decided to go and help. It’s giving what you have. Sometimes it's not a lot but sometimes it’s just the right amount.”
